One Hit Wonders of the 90s (Part 34)

Hello, dear reader. I have a favour to ask you. The original post begins after all of the asterisks, if you want to skip this.

Now that the One Hit Wonders of the 90s series is over, I'm not going to be doing my weekly revisiting of all these posts (I had to do that to add the new post to the bottom). Thus, I won't be able to catch any broken picture links or deleted videos any more. Yet I want these posts to be as good as possible.

Please, if you happen upon one of these posts, or if you take a walk through a whole bunch of them, let me know if you find anything that doesn't work. You can leave a comment, or you can send me a message using that handy "Contact Me" page linked above.

Also, feel free to let me know what you think of the post or any of the videos!

Thank you.

**************************

Has it really been 34 weeks since this whole thing started? Somehow I have trouble believing that. Not that this series has been going on so long, but that I've managed to do something on a weekly basis for that long, without missing a beat! I don't think I've ever done anything else that regularly (and successfully) besides run of the mill things like going to the bathroom and popping zits.

Ok, maybe not the popping zits part.

34 weeks? That's, like, 20 billion years or something!

Give or take.

Anyway, we're nearing the end of the decade, and I have to start seriously thinking about what I'm going to do next. I mean, there might only be six to eight weeks left before I'm done! My mind moves slowly.

But it always gets where it needs to be!

So what should I do to celebrate when I finish?

Get my hair done?

Or my nails?

Or maybe just do my civic duty and make sure that these guys shut up?

Let me know!

You can see where I'm taking this list from here, and you can even go look yourself if you want. I'm running out of pictures to post.

How'd he get in here! Scram!

And that is *so* not true...

Here we go!

1) Jimmy Ray: "Are You Jimmy Ray?" (#13)

Ok, I think I've been converted. Man, he is so *hot*! I'm just drooling into a puddle right now.

But I don't think he's Jimmy Ray. You notice he never really answers that question, right? I think this is probably the real Jimmy:

And this guy is just a stand-in for him so he can get the chicks (and newly-converted guys).

Hey, it's a disco trailer park! I've always wanted to live in one of those. And I love how the women vikings seem to have invaded South Florida.

This is kind of a fun song, and it's certainly got more life than any of the songs last week. That gives it bonus points right there. It's enormously silly and doesn't take itself too seriously.

And can you really go wrong like that?

(Ok, yeah, it's *possible*, but not this time)

2) Loreena McKennitt: "The Mummer's Dance" (#18)

First off, I'm a *huge* Loreena fan, so there won't be many (if any) jokes in this entry. Secondly, I love this song!

I was so happy when this song hit it big on the Pop charts, though truly surprised because she's been a Celtic/New Age niche artist for a long time. And she quickly reverted to that afterward, but at least this song became huge.

I'm not really sure what happened with this song, but isn't it cool? And what an imaginative video too! Ok, the "old-time movie" part, not the instrument-playing and singing, which happens all the time in videos.

Just sit back, take a listen, and know that there's more McKennitt goodness hovering around out there if you look for it.

First, here's an HD video of a concert version of "The Mummer's Dance." It's an excellent performance, and the words are a lot more intelligible. McKennitt's still got it.

Secondly, here's another favourite song of mine, "She Moved Through the Fair" (she does an intro to the song here at the beginning):

Finally, there's "All Soul's Night," probably my favourite next to "The Mummer's Dance":

Ok, back to the countdown! And the jokes.

3) Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz: "Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)" (#9)

Well, it has been a while since we've hit a rap song. But man, what a change from the last song! And not for the better.

It's definitely having an effect on me.

But I promise not to go off half-cocked.

4) The Verve: "Bittersweet Symphony" (#12)

This song was all over the airwaves in 1998, so much so that even *I* heard it! And I hated it, too. I'm not really sure why.

Maybe it's because the guy is so rude!

What is the point of this video? Life is a bittersweet symphony, so why not be an asshole? What did those people ever do to you, guy?

I should introduce this guy to my friend Dawn, who would set him straight about life, positive energy, and good manners too! This guy is such an energy-downer, I tell you. She would do wonders for him.

Maybe after talking to her for a bit, he'd turn himself around.

Ok, maybe not. She's awesome and everything, but I'm not sure if she's a miracle worker. I would be happy to be proved wrong, though!

Oh yeah, I remember why I hated this song. It's pretentious and annoying, and it was played *way* too often back in the day. Twelve years has not mellowed me on it.

5) Sylk-E Fyne (Featuring Chill): "Romeo & Juliet" (#6)

*sigh* Yeah, this is a great song to have hit #6 on the day of my wedding.

Ah well. For rap, it's not as annoying as a papercut with lemon juice (like most is), but it is kind of annoying like getting caught in the rain without an umbrella, when you're trying to carry an authentic Van Gogh painting that you just bought.

What, that doesn't happen to you? Happens to me all the time.

6) Marcy Playground: "Sex and Candy" (#8)

(Damn you, EMI! "Embedding Disabled?")

This is my other wedding song chart-topper (both this song and the previous one peaked on April 18, 1998).

This one is a lot better than the other one, but I'm not really sure it's appropriate, is it?

They really should let him out of that hole in the floor, shouldn't they? And that spider is creeping me out.

It's actually quite the interesting video, and while the song doesn't really make much sense, it's still kind of catchy, in that laid-back, They Might Be Giants (without the wacky humour) way.

What is it with 1998 and deadpan singers, though? Was the entire music industry on downers back then?

7) Canibus: "Second Round K.O." (#8)

(Yay, Vevo!)

Ok, we go from dreadfully boring (last week) to a steady rap beat? Where did all of this come from, as we haven't seen them in weeks?

Oh well. I guess *somebody* must like it.

Excuse me while I go let something out.

Because I'm an intellectual, don't ya know.

Oh, and I don't want to wake the wife up.

8) Sparkle: "Be Careful" (#32)

I saw "R. Kelly" and I immediately thought this was going to be bad! Then it started and I realized that it's been 3 minutes and more and we haven't heard from him yet!

That made me happy.

Then he opened up, and I was annoyed again.

But this actually isn't a bad song. On the other hand, c'mon. "If the shoe fits, where it?" Is this what's passing for lyrical brilliance these days? (Ok, I mean in *those* days).

And then it ends. WTF? "There's no such thing as a no good (sic) woman. Every no good woman was made no good by a no good man."

Ok, I was just about to say that the song does a good job of showing that there are two sides to every story, and then there may be the truth as well. Both sides have their beefs, but wouldn't it be better to work things out, for the kid's sake?

And then *this* crap is tacked on to the end of the video?

Give me a break.

If I wasn't writing this in a stream of consciousness fashion, that "actually isn't a bad song" would get changed in a heartbeat, just for that.

And thus we come to the end of another week of one-hit wonder brilliance! We've suffered a rap invasion, but we shall man the ramparts and push them back! Just let me put on my fighting gear.

And get our weapons out.

We'll beat back this invasion, or my name ain't Spartacus!!!!

What do you mean it's not?

Oh, well...never mind, then.

Time to go off and start my day. But first I'd better check my lottery tickets...

Hey, money's money!
